More and more individuals are deciding to take a year, or even more, off from the work force. A recent college graduate may want a year between her studies and her first job, or a parent may be expecting the birth of a child. Before making this decision, however, there are some factors to consider, even beyond the obvious question of planning how to pay living expenses.

A key question is what do you plan to do with that time? In some cases, it might be a fairly easy answer, like caring for children or an ailing relative. In others, though, you may have only decided that you need a break. Traveling and volunteering are options, but, whatever you might be interested in, you need to have some sort of plan beyond sitting on the couch and watching TV, if only to make a later transition back into the work force easier.

Another issue to consider is how you plan to keep your skills sharp. Even if you are contemplating a career change along with your time off, you will still want to be able to show future employers that you are still able to work well. You might consider volunteering your services on an occasional basis, or freelancing in your field.

Consider how your time off will affect your career path. You may lose touch with contacts that you need for promotion, or may be ‘mommy-tracked’ (a label given to women who have children distracting them from their careers). However, with effort, you can keep yourself in the loop throughout a sabbatical. You can find networking opportunities and be ready to dive back into advancing your career after your time off.

In most cases, employers welcome applicants with a break in their work history, as long as they can demonstrate that time was beneficial. For instance, taking a year to travel around the world can be hugely useful to an employer — you can point out your awareness of global issues, self-sufficiency and even expanded language skills. While not all employers will appreciate these abilities, many will consider it a boost to your value as an employee.

When you fail to achieve your career goals, what should you do? The following career planning tips offer an answer.

If you’ve made a career blunder you can either waste time blaming your luck, or review your career plans. But don’t you realize that you can turn this situation around?

Often you simply overlook your mistakes. You may know that setting effective goals helps you get where you want to be. You may be setting goals, but are they really realistic? Are you really focused on them?

Don’t Succumb To Peer Pressure

The reason most people fail in the area of career planning is that they either have unrealistic goals, or they are not working hard enough to achieve them.

The lesson here is to choose a career you are passionate about. As each person has their own individual strengths, weaknesses and potential it is a mistake to elect a line of work just because your friends are doing so.

Also, before you set any goal, remember to take into account of what it will take for you to succeed.

Set Specific, Realistic Career Goals

Many people set goals; however, they fail to achieve them because they are too vague. Your goal may sound good, but if it isn’t specific enough, you will probably end up frustrated. Likewise, unrealistic goals are hard to achieve and will only make you feel like a failure.

If you are looking to advance your career, choose a field that has a wide variety of options. Some professions may leave you stagnant and allow no room for forward movement. Let’s say you are a teacher; you may not find many career advancement opportunities unless you pursue an advanced degree.

Overall, career planning isn’t rocket science, but it does take careful thought, research and hard work.

You may have received a job offer — the one you’ve always dreamed about. Before you can start it, though, you have to resign from your current position. Even if you faced problems, you need to resign politely and avoid the conflicts that can stem from taking a new position.

If you go out with a bang, instead, you can face a lot of problems from your burnt bridges down the road. Hiring managers have been known to contact applicants’ past employers, even if they aren’t listed as references. With a little planning, though, you can leave quietly and with goodwill.

1. Plan out your resignation in advance. Get all of your current projects in order. You should be able to tell your manager or replacement the exact status of any given project, as well as point out the next steps. You should also take the time to review any contract you might have with your current employer, as well as any resignation procedures listed in your company handbook. Once you’ve set the ball rolling, you need to know what is needed to tie up loose ends, like your health care and retirement package.

2. Give your employer as much advance warning as you can. Two weeks is considered standard, and many employers include a requirement for at least that much notice in their contracts. Even an extra week of notice can really improve your employer’s view of your resignation: you’ll have a better chance of tidying up your projects, and may even train your replacement before you go.

3. Write a polite letter of resignation. Avoid bringing up criticism in your letter of resignation, and it is acceptable to entirely omit your reason for leaving. A letter of resignation only needs to contain your job title, the effective date of your resignation and your signature. Be aware that many companies will expect you to leave immediately if you hand in a letter of resignation, and be prepared to do so.

No matter how well your resignation goes, there might be a few hard feelings. The only thing you should focus on is completing your responsibilities before you leave. It’s the easiest way to build goodwill and leave an impression that will last even after you’ve left.

Have you ever become overwhelmed with the humdrum of everyday life? Or have you reached the point in your career where you would like to make some major changes and want to boldly enter a new field? Many working professionals ask themselves these very questions but are unsure of where to begin.

You may have grown bored with you current job, unsatisfied with your pay rate, or simply feel that you are not valued in your current company. These feelings can be frustrating, but remember: you have the power to bring about change!

You’ve Got Options

There are several options that you can use to help break the cycle. You can either

1) acquire new skills that will help to advance your existing career, or

2) obtain training that will enable you to enter a new field.

Fortunately, advances in technology have made it easier than ever to take courses online or even complete a graduate degree program!

The Internet has made a distance learning degree a reality and is ideal for working adults. Classes are held online and have message boards where students hold discussions, ask questions, and post assignments. Additional training will give you skills that you can use to market yourself or ask for a pay raise. Continuing education programs are the building blocks for future endeavors. Knowledge is power – so get yours today.

Whether you want to jump start a new career or breathe life into your old one, education and training is the way to go.

Do you have a hobby like a stamp collections or a coin collections? If you really enjoy doing it you might be wondering whether you could spend more time on your hobby and less time at work. But can you turn the hobby into a serious profession?

Understanding your own interests are one of many important consideration for choosing an ideal career. As your hobby relates to your interests — in fact, it is a collection of your strong interests — you can easily check how your hobby relates to your career interest test results. Interestingly, we are usually very skilled at our hobbies and we have a chance not to separate what we enjoy doing from our occupations.

How Do You Turn Your Hobby into a Career?

Let’s take a coin collection hobby as an example. Coin collection is a hobby that has existed for centuries. A coin collection will be worth a lot in the near future and will truly provide you with great satisfaction as well. If you love history, you will not only get a piece of history from different countries, but you will also have a chance to get high return on your investment. If you have a very rare coin in your hands it can worth as much as a million dollars.

Imagine, as a coin collector, you hold of a rare coin of the Ming Dynasty in ancient China. How much is this kind of coin worth nowadays? Even if the coin was only worth 5 cents nominally, you can expect that this coin will definitely appreciate in value because of its historic significance, its rarity and its age.

The great thing about coin collections is that you will be able to turn that hobby into a high rewarding career and a very lucrative investment as well. For example, you can start a coin collecting business by starting a rare coin dealership or you can become an expert in rare coin appraiser, if you determine that running a business isn’t for you.

There are many ways to start your collection career. First, you have to decide what kind of coin collection career you want to start. You can relate this career choice based on coins you have collected. If you have collected World War II coins, then you may want to open a rare coin store or become an appraiser of coins from that era.

In short, coin collections are not just a fun hobby to have, but it is also a good investment and it can become a great career. You will be able to turn your hobby into a career, full-time, and invest your time and money in something that will be worth a lot in the future. However, before you choose the career path, be sure to research your career choice thoroughly. Avoid the path if you consider one aspect or more of it isn’t right for you.
